Analytical, numerical and experimental investigation of composite folded plates

Author

Abstract

This research studies the mechanical behavior of composite folded plates. The concept of composite folded plates is a new innovation in design which has been registered as a patent. Due to the high load bearing / weight ratio, composite folded structures have many advantages and applications. In this research, the structures made of composite folded plates are explained in detail and different loading cases on this kind of structure are considered. Two analytical and numerical methods are used for the structural analysis. The analytical method presented in this research developed as a closed from solution technique. Analytical solutions for each metallic and composites (glass mat/polyester), with equal thicknesses and also equal weights, are accomplished and the maximum allowable loads are compared with each other. The present research shows that the composite structure with a lower weight with respect to the metallic structure, presents a higher load bearing / weight ratio. Based on the design methodology presented in this research, a folded plate structure is manufactured using composite materials and tested for the load bearing capacity. The results obtained in this research show the high load bearing capacity of the designed structure.
