Overhead distribution networks (low voltage and medium voltage) are always exposed to threats from lightning transients due to their extensiveness and location in various and open environments. Lightning can directly and indirectly cause dangerous and destructive overvoltages in medium voltage (MV) networks. Due to the low voltage level and low insulation distances (low insulation withstand) of distribution network equipment, the possibility of damage to distribution network equipment and flashover occurrence and outages in these networks due to the effects of lightning electromagnetic waves is high. Therefore, protecting distribution networks against lightning transients is of great importance in order to MV network equipment and increase its reliability. Several factors affect the performance of distribution networks against lightning effects. Therefore, in this paper, by modeling and simulating the transient and high frequency behavior of all distribution network equipment and the factors affecting it, the performance of various solutions to reduce the amplitude of lightning transient overvoltages and increase the level of protection of distribution network equipment against lightning effects under different conditions has been investigated and analyzed. The results of the simulation and studies conducted with the EMTP-RV for the MV distribution network under study show that the resistance of the grounding network at the foot of the poles plays an effective role on the amplitude of the transient overvoltages generated. Also, the optimal use and installation of zinc oxide (ZnO) arresters is the most appropriate method to improve the performance of medium-voltage distribution networks and their equipment against lightning.
